Onsite Chest X-Rays for Quarry Workers
Drilling, blasting, crushing and screening rock all generate respirable crystalline silica. ILOXAUS brings the X-ray unit to your quarry so the crew is imaged on site, with every X-ray classified to the ILO standard by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist.
Why quarries screen on site
Quarries are often a long way from the nearest imaging clinic, and crews run on tight production schedules. Sending workers off site for a chest X-ray means lost shifts, travel time and roster gaps. Bringing the unit to the site office means the whole crew can be imaged in one visit, between tasks.
Quarry dust exposure builds up over a working life. Consistent imaging, classified to the same international standard each time, makes change easier for your doctor to track.
Quarry work we screen
- Hard rock, sand and gravel quarries
- Drill and blast crews
- Crushing, screening and washing plant operators
- Load and haul crews and weighbridge staff
- Maintenance fitters and boilermakers on plant
- Asphalt, concrete and pre-cast plants
- Sandstone and dimension stone extraction
Where we screen quarry crews
Sites off the road network are covered by our Flight Ready unit, which travels by air with our team for remote, offshore and FIFO work.
NIOSH-certified B Reader · ILO classification
ILO classification by a NIOSH-certified B Reader
An image on its own is not a health monitoring record. Every chest X-ray we take is read and classified against the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist, so the result is consistent and defensible for your records, for regulators and for your workers. Single ILO reads and dual reads with adjudication are both available.
How a quarry screening visit runs
01
Book a visit
Send us your quarry location, crew size and preferred window, and we scope road or Flight Ready access.
02
We come to you
The unit mobilises to your quarry by road, or flies in where a truck cannot reach.
03
Screen on site
Chest X-rays are taken on location, worker by worker, between tasks rather than off site.
04
ILO-classified results
A NIOSH-certified B Reader classifies each X-ray and results are reported to you and your workers.
Health surveillance for quarry workers
Who regulates quarries depends on the state. In Queensland, quarries sit under the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act, and respiratory health surveillance is required before a worker starts and at least every five years, including spirometry and a chest X-ray dual-read to the ILO standard. In NSW, quarries come under the work health and safety laws for mines and petroleum sites, administered by the NSW Resources Regulator.
In Victoria, WorkSafe Victoria regulates quarries under the OHS laws, in South Australia it is SafeWork SA, and in Tasmania it is WorkSafe Tasmania, whose guidance for quarry and mining sites notes that silica health checks may use a chest X-ray or HRCT. We supply the ILO-classified chest X-ray on site, as a single read or a dual read with adjudication. Confirm your specific obligations with your regulator or supervising doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Can you set up at a remote quarry?
Yes. The unit travels by road to regional quarries, and our Flight Ready unit flies in with our team where a truck cannot reach.
Do you offer dual reads?
Yes. Every X-ray can be classified by a single NIOSH-certified B Reader, or dual-read with adjudication where your health monitoring program calls for it.
Who reads and classifies the X-rays?
Every X-ray is classified against the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist. You can choose a single ILO read, or a dual read with adjudication for an added layer of certainty.
How long does screening take per worker?
A few minutes each. We screen the whole crew in one visit and work around your roster, including night shifts and shutdown windows.
Do you provide spirometry?
We provide the onsite chest X-ray and its ILO-classified report. Lung function testing, any CT imaging and the medical assessment are arranged through your supervising doctor, and our report forms the imaging part of the record.
How do we get the results?
Once each X-ray has been classified we report back to you and your workers, so the result can go straight into your health monitoring records.
