Onsite ILO Chest X-Rays in the Northern Territory

ILOXAUS is expanding onsite ILO chest X-ray screening into the Northern Territory. We bring the X-ray unit to your site by road or by air, and every X-ray is classified to the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist.

Why Territory worksites screen on site

Distance is the Territory’s biggest barrier to health monitoring. Mines, quarries and project sites can be hundreds of kilometres from the nearest imaging service, so sending a crew to Darwin or Alice Springs costs days, not hours. Screening on site means the whole crew is imaged during their swing, with no flights, accommodation or lost shifts for your workers.

For remote and fly-in sites, our Flight Ready unit travels by air with our team, so even operations well off the sealed road network can screen on location.

Where we travel in the Northern Territory

  • Darwin and Palmerston
  • Litchfield and the Darwin rural area
  • Katherine and Pine Creek
  • East Arnhem and Nhulunbuy
  • Groote Eylandt
  • Tennant Creek and the Barkly
  • Alice Springs and Central Australia
  • The Tanami and remote mine sites

Sites off the road network are covered by our Flight Ready unit, which travels by air with our team for remote, island and FIFO work. Nearby coverage: Queensland and South Australia. Industry guides: mining, quarries, construction, stone and benchtop work and manufacturing.

NIOSH-certified B Reader · ILO classification

ILO classification by a NIOSH-certified B Reader

An image on its own is not a health monitoring record. Every chest X-ray we take is read and classified against the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist, so the result is consistent and defensible for your records, for regulators and for your workers. Single ILO reads and dual reads with adjudication are both available.

How a Territory site visit runs

01

Book a visit

Send us your site location, access requirements, crew size and roster, and we scope road or Flight Ready access.

02

We come to you

The unit drives to your site, or flies in with our team where road access does not suit.

03

Screen on site

Chest X-rays are taken on location, worker by worker, between tasks rather than off site.

04

ILO-classified results

A NIOSH-certified B Reader classifies each X-ray and results are reported to you and your workers.

Health monitoring duties in the Northern Territory

NT WorkSafe regulates work health and safety in the Territory, including health and safety in mining. Where a worker is exposed to respirable crystalline silica, NT WorkSafe’s guidance on silica health screening says monitoring should be supervised by a registered medical practitioner and include an ILO chest X-ray (full PA view), alongside a respiratory questionnaire, lung function testing and occupational history.

The engineered stone ban applies in the Territory. Businesses must notify NT WorkSafe before permitted work on installed engineered stone, and again every 12 months or when details change. We supply the ILO-classified chest X-ray component on site. Confirm your obligations with NT WorkSafe or your occupational physician.

Frequently asked questions

Do you come to our site, or do workers have to travel to Darwin?

Our mobile unit comes to you. We set up at your Territory worksite and image your crew on location, between tasks, so nobody has to travel to town for a chest X-ray.

Can you reach remote and island sites?

Yes. Our Flight Ready unit travels by air with our team for remote, island and FIFO sites, and the road unit covers sites on the road network.

Who reads and classifies the X-rays?

Every X-ray is classified against the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist. You can choose a single ILO read, or a dual read with adjudication for an added layer of certainty.

How long does screening take per worker?

A few minutes each. We screen the whole crew in one visit and work around your roster, including night shifts and shutdown windows.

Are you booking Northern Territory work now?

We are expanding into the Territory and taking enquiries now. Send us your site and crew details and we will confirm availability and timing for your job.

How do we get the results?

Once each X-ray has been classified we report back to you and your workers, so the result can go straight into your health monitoring records.
