Onsite Chest X-Rays for Coal and Metalliferous Mine Workers

Coal dust and crystalline silica are long-standing respiratory hazards in mining. ILOXAUS brings the X-ray unit to your mine, by road or by air, and every X-ray is classified to the ILO standard by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist.

Why mines screen on site

Mine sites are remote, rosters are long and every worker sent to town for imaging is a shift lost. Screening at the mine means the crew is imaged during their swing, with no extra travel and no callbacks on days off.

The NSW and Queensland coal health schemes now build ILO classification and a second, independent read of chest imaging into their requirements.

Mining work we screen

  • Open cut and underground coal operations
  • Coal handling and preparation plants
  • Metalliferous and hard rock mines
  • Mineral processing and concentrators
  • Drill and blast and exploration drilling crews
  • Maintenance and shutdown contractors
  • Rail load-out and port handling

Where we screen mine crews

Sites off the road network are covered by our Flight Ready unit, which travels by air with our team for remote, offshore and FIFO work.

NIOSH-certified B Reader · ILO classification

ILO classification by a NIOSH-certified B Reader

An image on its own is not a health monitoring record. Every chest X-ray we take is read and classified against the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist, so the result is consistent and defensible for your records, for regulators and for your workers. Single ILO reads and dual reads with adjudication are both available.

How a mine site visit runs

01

Book a visit

Send us your mine location, access requirements, crew size and roster, and we scope road or Flight Ready access.

02

We come to you

The unit drives to your mine, or flies in with our team where road access does not suit.

03

Screen on site

Chest X-rays are taken on location, worker by worker, between tasks rather than off site.

04

ILO-classified results

A NIOSH-certified B Reader classifies each X-ray and results are reported to you and your workers.

Mining health surveillance schemes

In NSW, coal mine workers are covered by Coal Services Order 45, which has applied since 1 January 2026. It uses a single health assessment every three years, and new chest imaging must be reported to the ILO classification and independently reviewed by at least two medical practitioners. Metalliferous mines in NSW are regulated by the NSW Resources Regulator.

In Queensland, the Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme requires assessments before starting work and at least every five years, with chest X-rays read to the ILO standard by an RSHQ-registered B Reader and then read a second time. Mineral mine and quarry workers have their own respiratory health surveillance before starting and at least every five years. Each scheme sets its own pathway, so check with your Appointed Medical Adviser or Coal Services how our imaging fits your obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fly in to a remote mine?

Yes. Our Flight Ready unit travels by air with our team for remote and FIFO sites, and the road unit covers mines on the road network.

Do you offer dual reads?

Yes. Every X-ray can be classified by a single NIOSH-certified B Reader, or dual-read with adjudication where your health monitoring program calls for it.

Who reads and classifies the X-rays?

Every X-ray is classified against the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses by a NIOSH-certified B Reader radiologist. You can choose a single ILO read, or a dual read with adjudication for an added layer of certainty.

Can our coal scheme medicals use your X-rays?

The NSW and Queensland coal health schemes set their own requirements for who reads chest imaging and how. Talk to us and to your Appointed Medical Adviser or Coal Services before booking, so the imaging is arranged to suit your scheme.

Can you screen around our roster?

Yes. We schedule around your roster, including night shift, swing changes and shutdown windows, so every crew is covered.

How do we get the results?

Once each X-ray has been classified we report back to you and your workers, so the result can go straight into your health monitoring records.
